On 4 June 1701 Antoine de la Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac
set sail from Montreal, New France, to found a new settlement
in
the Great Lakes at le détroit, the straits. Bringing
with him twenty-five canoes, fifty soldiers and fifty voyagers,
he reached his destination on 24 July 1701.
